The Moccasin Hollow Impoundment project was located in the Cabin Creek area of Kanawha County, West Virginia. The project was to build a dam for a future coal slurry impoundment on a 70-acre site, and included clearing, erosion control, dewatering, access road construction, excavation of 1,745,000 cubic yards, drilling and blasting rock, coal removal, underdrain systems, storm drainage, settlement monitors and piezometers. Also, 111,346 tons of rock were crushed for the filter zone of the dam. The dam was completed while slurry was being pumped into the impoundment. The soil/rock needed for the dam was obtained by contour mining within the impoundment area, producing 150,000 tons of coal, which helped finance the project. Coal refuse (100,000 cubic yards), a by-product, was used in completing one of the zones of the dam which saved the owner a lot of money. This project was plagued by excessive rain and flooding.
Coordinating different types of material needed for the various zones within the dam, while removing the overburden to extract the multiple seams of coal, demanded extensive planning and communications.
